1916 Commemoration Cycle

On Good Friday, GoreyCC members Kevin, Gerry and Jason cycled from the GPO in Dublin to the Civic Centre in Gorey to commemorate the epic cycle undertaken by Paul Galligan from Dublin to Enniscorthy in 1916 to say that the rising was to go ahead.

The lads had an early start from Gorey and arrived outside the GPO about 8.30am. After meeting up with fellow cyclist Donal Evoy and a quick photo, it was onto the road for the approx. 94km ride home. It was a very enjoyable cycle in what turned out to be very good conditions for the time of year, despite a light headwind most of the way. They were welcomed at the Civic Centre in Gorey by family, fellow club members, town councillors and photographers about 1pm.

Thanks to Joe Dixon Photos and Derek Webb for some of the shots.

There is a change to this years format with only one longer stage on the Sunday, 120km comprising of 5 laps of a loop between Gorey, Craanford and Camolin. Racing in Blarney & The Des Hanlon

While we had a good contingent competing in Carlow at the Des Hanlon Memorial on Sunday last, GoreyCC’s Joe Christian (pictured in background) travelled all the way to Blarney for his race. A tough, fast race saw Joe finish just outside the top placings.

In Carlow, John and Darren were looking to get in some good race miles before the upcoming Gorey 3Day. Darren did well to get back on to the second group over the line after being brought down on the final climb, while John finished ahead in the main bunch. Well done also to Brendan who competed in the A4 event.

St. Patrick’s Day – Carrick-on-Suir

Some great pics of the GoreyCC lads in action yesterday in Carrick-on-Suir thanks to Sean Rowe. Some good spring weather saw record numbers signing on for the now traditional and popular St. Patrick’s Day event with 3 separate races on the cards. Murt, Alex and John finished comfortably in the bunch in their race, while in the A4 event, Brendan was unlucky to be involved in a crash among the breakaway group within sight of the line.

You can see more in Sean’s photo album here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/… and a full race report from Carrick Wheelers here: http://carrickwheelers.com/?p=3264

Traders Cup, Dundalk

Well done to the Gorey Cycling Club lads who made the long trip to Dundalk today for the Traders Cup race. The day was marred by numerous crashes with one of our lads getting involved in a tangle, but all made it to the finish. See Sean Rowe’s gallery for more of the action here.

The Club had very enjoyable get together on Friday night in Eco Restaurant Gorey for some lovely food, a few beverages and lots of cycling talk. The highlight of the evening was the presentation by Club Chairman Gerry of a framed club jersey, signed by fellow club members, to Joe Christian in recognition of his recent achievement at the World Masters Championships in Austria. Joe finished an impressive 6th in his category to round off a very good season.

Wexford County Championships (Round 2)

Brendan Dunne finishes 3rd A4 at the Wexford County Championships

Well done to all who raced the rescheduled Wexford County Championships on Tuesday September 8th, hosted by South East Road Club. The previous attempt had to be postponed after a serious road traffic accident closed part of the route. A good result for GoreyCC with Brendan Dunne (pictured) taking 3rd place in the A4 race and Joe Christian finishing 1st A1. Well done lads!
