Some pics from the postponed Wexford County Championships on August 29th. Unfortunately, the race had to be abandoned after a serious traffic accident closed a section of the route just after the race started. The race is rescheduled to Tuesday, September 8th at 6pm with a revised route.
Gorey Cycling Club’s Joe Christian will be heading off to Austria next week to compete in the World Masters Cycling Championships. Joe has several race wins and podium finishes already this season and recently competed in the Irish Masters Road Race Championships, finishing 8th in the Masters 40 category. The Irish Masters were run in conjunction with the National Road Race Championships in Omagh in June. Joe was also one of a three man team from Gorey Cycling Club to compete in this year’s Gorey 3 Day Cycle Race over the Easter weekend. The competition at the Masters is always tough, but if Joe is showing some great form at the moment, the latest win only this week in Camross at the Bike Shop League.
About the World Masters Championships
St. Johann in Tirol in Austria has been the site of World Masters Road Championships for 44 years. The road race in St. Johann in Tirol is one of the biggest cycle sports event in the world. Over 3500 participants from 53 nations do battle in several categorised races for those sought-after medals. The Masters is open to all licensed racers, between the ages of 18 and 80 and they will race over multiple laps of a 40km circuit.
An extra club spin was put on for the August Bank Holiday Monday and the group stopped off for a bit of breakfast and a welcome break from the wind at The Greenhouse Cafe in Springmount Garden Centre. Some lovely grub was served up by the ladies there and we highly recommend you pay them a visit. We think this will have to become a regular thing!
We would like to congratulate club member Mark Radford on completion of his London to Paris cycle in aid of children’s charity, Action Medical Research. Mark had been training hard on the hills around Monaseed and Holyfort in preparation for this event, which covered nearly 500km over 4 days. Mark is also director of MeasurIT Technologies, one of our sponsors.
Action Medical Research is a charity offering hope to the many thousands of families who are dealing with the trauma of a baby born too early, striving to support a child affected by disability, or facing the challenge of caring for a child with a rare and devastating disease for which there is no cure. If you would like to help Mark’s cause, visit his fundraiser page here: http://www.action.org.uk/sponsor/markradford
Club man Barry Hammel took on and completed the gruelling L’Etape du Tour 2015, Sunday, July 19th. A total of 15,000 participants followed the route of the 19th stage of the 2015 Tour de France.
They set off from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne at 7am and after 138.3 kilometres of intense effort and four mythical mountain passes climbed in sunny conditions, the riders reached the resort of La Toussuire-Les Sybelles.
L’Etape du Tour has been running for over 20 years. The idea behind it was to allow thousands of amateur cyclists to share the beauty and toughness of Tour de France mountain stages. Anyone up for 2016?
GoreyCC was well represented for the last St Luke’s Charity Sportive, “The Final Push” on Sunday with all getting around in one piece. The weather turned out perfect for cycling. A big thank you to the organisers for another well run and very enjoyable event and it will be sadly missed from the sportive calendar next year. Thanks to IrishCycleSport.com for some of the photos.
Well done to Joe Christian on his great performance in Saturday’s Masters’ 40 Irish National Road Race Championship in Omagh. There were 3 Masters titles up for grabs on Saturday with over 200 riders competing. The Masters 40 had the largest field with 126 riders and some of the biggest names in Irish Cycling.
Joe finished 8th overall in a bunch sprint finish of what was a very fast and competitive race. Several breaks containing many of the big names were quickly closed down by the chasing bunch, giving some indication of the frantic pace. Joe has been showing some great form lately with recent wins in the Christy McManus Memorial and the SERC league. Chapeau!
